CHAPTER SIXTEEN

They Know

Caleb led me down High Street’s bricked sidewalk. We were surrounded by tourists strolling in and out of the tiny shops lining both sides of the street. Mothers pushed strollers. Older couples—who for some reason all seemed to be dressed alike in khakis and windbreakers—held hands and admired the overflowing baskets of flowers hung from the lamp posts running up and down the street.

Caleb held my hand. It was strange and a little scary, being part of a couple. Especially since we were right out in public. Not that I knew anyone here besides him and Sophie, but still. It felt like everyone was staring at us, as if we were our own couple parade marching down between the shops, even though I knew logically nobody was giving us a second glance.

We passed a group of kids sitting and hanging out on a low stonewall, I felt Caleb’s hand tighten slightly on mine and Sophie draw closer—I wondered if they knew them. Caleb had never mentioned any friends. We passed them and a couple of the girls looked up from their phones but Caleb didn’t even break stride. Based on Sophie’s comments and Caleb’s intense interest in everything Egypt, it wasn’t hard to figure out that he probably didn’t have many friends—if any. Not that it mattered to me, I wasn’t exactly the homecoming queen at West Christian.

“Here Charlotte!” Sophie pointed to a shop window a few yards ahead. “They’ll have a decent chain here.”

Caleb and I followed her in and I browsed the jewelry cases looking for a new silver chain. “This one,” I pointed.

The sales person pulled the chain from the case. I tried it on to check the length. “What about this one?” When I turned, Caleb jumped away from the case he was bent over, and walked quickly to me. “It’s nice,” he offered.

Sophie considered a pair of long earring dangling from her own ears in a mirror, “Yes, that’s perfect Charlotte.”

“You didn’t even look.”

“I did,” she glanced at me. “It’s perfect,” she repeated turning back to her own reflection.

“I’ll take it,” I handed the necklace back to the sales girl. “What were you looking at?” I asked Caleb as I moved towards the case he’d just been hovering over.

“What?” his voice cracked. “Me? I wasn’t looking at anything…”

I saw the rows of rings in the case he’d been next to.

“I was just roaming around,” he added unconvincingly.

I nodded my head and moved quickly past the rings choosing to believe him.

The lady rang up my purchase and I paid cash.

“Cyberzone is just the next block,” Caleb said pulling me from my thoughts. “After, I thought we could see some of the sights.” He shrugged. “It’s funny, living here I never come to see them but with you it gives me a good excuse. There’s the Tor, and Glastonbury Abby, and the Chalice Well. People come from all over the world for the festival at the end of June. It’s kind of crazy, lots of hippies and healers, but we could come if you want.
